Entering its 25 th anniversary in year of 2002, Bapepam along with capital market participants still focused their efforts to sustain their existence amid the economic downturn. High commitment among the capital market players are needed to face the challenge and to achieve expectation which has been delayed as an impact of prolonged economic crisis. One of the efforts which have been continuously conducted was the socialization and promotion of capital market to the public across Indonesia region

Coinciding with the celebration of 25^th Capital Market Anniversary in the year of 2002, Bapepam conducted five capital market socializations and promotions in the form of seminars in five cities, which were Jakarta, Kediri, Lampung, Palembang, dan Balikpapan. Seminar with the theme of “Tips for Successful Investment” was hailed with a positive attitude from the local business participants who have an enormous potential to participate in the capital market. Additionally, Bapepam has also socialized the capital market progress toward journalist for both printed and electronic media as an effort to disseminate the capital market information.

In year 2002, public interest toward capital market became more noticeable, as shown from the increasing number of students who visited Bapepam and conducted research on capital market topics for their thesis. Throughout year of 2002, Bapepam has hosted15 visitation from various education institutions and universities, among them were: Academy of Company Leadership,Jakarta, Magister Management Program at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, INABA Economics College of Bandung, Notary Student Fellowship of Padjajaran University Bandung, Janabadra University  Yogyakarta, Accounting State College, Faculty of Economics, Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta. Besides, Bapepam has also organized socialization for the employees of The Audit Board of The Republic of Indonesia and for the winner of Stock Exchange Game organized by Surabaya Stock Exchange.

During year of 2002, Bapepam has granted permission for 103 College students to conduct capital market research in Bapepam. Also90visitors were counted for visiting Bapepam’s library . These visitors were college students, professionals as well as government officials.

As an effort to uphold the information disclosure principle and as a manifestation of Bapepam’s responsibility toward the public, Bapepam has always announced the revision of its policies, its investigation results and other important events by issuing press releases or arranging press conferences. In the year of 2002, Bapepam has announced 17 press releases.

Still in connection with the celebration of 25^th Indonesian capital market anniversary, Bapepam in cooperation with SROs and other capital market participants organized several events which were Capital Market Quiz for High School students in Jakarta region and Competition on capital market scientific thesis for college students and journalist. Those activities were intended to nurture public awareness to have a better understanding about capital market

Human Resources Development Education

Along with the rapid development of capital market, the need for qualified human resources is unavoidable. In respond to this demand, Bapepam has continuously conducted several educations and trainings for its employees. During year 2002, seven employees have finished their master degree in Gadjah Mada University, one employee has obtained his master degree from overseas university.  Thus by the end of year 2002, the total number of Bapepam employees holding master degree were 78 or 17, 38 % of total 443 employees, meanwhile the employees holding bachelor degree were 189 or 42, 89 %.

 Also, in year of 2002, Bapepam sent six employees to attend domestic graduate program, two employees under the coordination of the Financial Education and Training Agency of Ministry of Finance, meanwhile the rest of four employees under the collaboration between Bapepam and Istismar. In Addition, 14 employees under the collaboration of Financial Education and Training Agency of Ministry of Finance  , STUNED, and AUSAID have been  pursuing their overseas master degree. For doctoral program, one employee received doctoral program scholarship from Nanyang University, Singapore. In 2002, there were four employess that took preparation class program for taking Master Program in overseas university funded by AUSAID Scholarship.

Training and Seminar

Besides long term educational program, in year of 2002, Bapepam has arranged several in-house trainings and seminars with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Financial Education and Training Agency of Ministry of Finance, Bapepam has also conducted several in house trainings and seminars. Still in cooperation with ADB, AUSAID, Indian Government, World Bank, IMF Institute and Japan Government through Financial Service Agency, Bapepam sent its employees to participate in domestic seminars and training as well as overseas ones.

Research

During year 2002, Bapepam through Capital Market Efficiency Enhancement Project, has conducted researches in Capital Market Sector. The researches were:

1.   Study on Discretionary Fund Management Monitoring by Investment Manager.

2.   Study on Exchange Member Readiness in Implementing Remote Trading System

3.    Study on The Implementation of Shelf Registration in the Indonesian Capital Market .

4.   Study on The Implementation on Employee Stock Ownership Plan Implementation (ESOP) for Issuers and Public Companies in The Indonesian Capital Market.  

5.   Study on Alternative Trading System in the Indonesian Capital Market.

6.   Study on The Structure  of Cost on Shares Investment in the Indonesian Capital market.
