Bapepam recruited 18 employees in 1999 with backgrounds in economics, law, and social science, bringing total Bapepam staff to 465 persons.

As of the end of 1999, 18 employees were in master programs overseas and one employee was in a doctoral program. Currently, 45 staff members hold master’s degrees (9.7%) and 208 staf members hold college degrees (44.7%).

Bapepam received assistance in 1999 from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with respect to a project on market efficiency enhancement that’s include institutional capacity building, management information systems and settlement systems. The project provided training on market surveillence, accounting, and corporate governance.

To improve professional qualifications, Bapepam also sent employees overseas to attend various seminars and training sessions such as Strengthening the Architecture of Financial Market Systems (Australia); Securities Market Regulation; High Level Regional Workshop on The Asian Financial Crisis; and the Round Table on Securities Market Reform in the Asian Financial Crisis (Japan); The Islamic Investment Corporation (Saudi Arabia); the APEC Financial Regulation Training Seminar (Malaysia); the Year 2000 Seminar (Hong Kong); and an IOSCO APRC Enforcement Course (South Korea).
